Along with this album, I have a gigantic archive of my vinyl digitizations that gets added to every week. I do them myself and de-click them. Most sound pretty darned good, if I do say so myself.

Parking Lot Wonders - Dennis Brennan - Jack-in-the-Pulpit



Eons ago, before all the great record stores became extinct, they used to hold bi-yearly parking lot sales where CD's could be purchased for as little as 10 cents apiece.   I would stand out in the hot sun and pluck economically auditory gold from acres of cardboard boxes until my back gave out.  Many times I walked away with 1,000 plus CD's and CD singles.  Oh glorious rapture!  Those days, alas, are gone, but I still have my blessed collection.

Roots-rock singer/songwriter Dennis Brennan played in a succession of Boston-area bands before forming his own group in the early '90s. Born and raised in rural Berlin, Massachusetts, he began playing Worcester-area and then Boston-area clubs after graduating from high school. For more than two decades, he worked with Boston bands like the Martells, who scored a number one hit on Boston rock radio in 1980; later in the decade, his band Push Push flirted with several major label recording deals. In 1990, a major label signed the Rhode Island act Young Neal and the Vipers, and label executives pressured them to drop their lead singer and bring in Brennan. That didn't last very long, and after other "almost record deals" fell through, Brennan took a break from his singing and songwriting to work as a warehouse foreman. After a few months, he found himself growing into an increasingly prolific songwriter; some of the results -- frequently about life's hardships, trials and tribulations -- were showcased on his 1995 debut album for Rounder, Jack in the Pulpit, on which he was accompanied by guitarist Duke Levine and drummer Billy Conway of Morphine. Iodine in the Wine followed in 1996, and in early 2000 Brennan returned with Rule No. 1. ~ Richard Skelly

After a few bland movie roles during the late '80s, Danielle Brisebois went from a sweet child actress to a tigress singer/songwriter with a strong disposition. Her debut Arrive All Over You has both pop magnificence and '70s funk flair, along with fragile and thinly veiled emotions. It's unfortunate that this album went largely unnoticed during the reign of gangsta rap and grunge, for Brisebois' heartfelt songwriting is hauntingly similar to the subsequent confessional catharses of Alanis Morissette. Arrive All Over You, issued a year before Morissette's 1995 pinch-hitting Jagged Little Pill, is a soul-oriented album with its share of glossy, light, and playful lyrics from Brisebois. Songs such as "Middla My Heart" and the cover of Brenton Wood's "Gimme Little Sign" capture Brisebois' childlike sassiness, but such ear candy isn't representative of the album in its entirety. Brisebois had collaborated with producer/songwriter Gregg Alexander for several years, and he brings her anguish to life, especially on the tracks "What if God Fell From the Sky" and "Ain't Gonna Cry No More." Both tunes are outstanding lovesuckers, and fine examples of what was to come from females in rock during the '90s. Too bad Brisebois' work was lost in the shuffle, for Arrive All Over You is an earnest and impressive effort.

Just a great opening song on this one.  In fact this is a pretty fine album. Just goes to show - quality of music is no guarantee of success. Highly recommended.

 Formerly of the Morning Glories, Christian Gibbs continues to make a name for himself as a solo performer with his second album, 29 Over Me. As befits a musician with a background including busking in London and performing in a driving rock trio, the album collects 14 diverse songs written by Gibbs. The album ranges from melodic pop like "House in a Bottle" to the dynamic mix of strings and rock rhythms on "Bruises to Claim." The eclecticism of 29 Over Me spotlights Gibbs' talents as a singer and songwriter.

The band was formed in Luleå in 1993, and released their first full-length album in 1995. Pelle Gunnerfeldt from Fireside recorded and mixed several of the group's albums. Shortly after the release of Kollapse the band announced that they had decided to split up. The band played a reunion show in Stockholm on 6 December 2007 and ended the show by destroying all their instruments, leading fans to speculate that this would be the band's final show.
Breach started as a metal influenced hardcore band. The band's later style features a mixture of hardcore, crust punk, post-hardcore, post rock and black/thrash metal. They combine fast metallic parts with clean, atmospheric guitar lines. Their production is a lot rawer and harsher than that of most modern post-hardcore bands.

Not bad pop! His voice is a tad week. Kind of reminds me a little of the Pet Shop Boys with a little Bram Tchaikovsky thrown in.

A five-song EP that was five years in the making, Andrew's debut is a gem of Left Banke/Zombies-influenced chamber pop that's over much too fast. Andrew is Andrew Sandoval, a walking encyclopedia of '60s musical trivia who first became known as a music historian and reissue producer. (The exemplary mid-'90s series of Monkees reissue discs were overseen by Sandoval.) These songs are crisply recorded pop with just-so production touches, like the tambourine that drives the Byrdsy opener "The Man Who Would Be King" and the gossamer harmonies and gently psychedelic string section of "Dream About You." Not all of the songs are up to the quality of the arrangements; "Here, Hear" lacks a strong melody to go with its clever lyrics, and the Bee Gees obscurity "Nobody's Someone" only proves that some songs are obscure for a reason, though Roger Neill's orchestration keeps that song from being a wash. But when Sandoval's writing skills match with his exquisite sense of arrangement, as on the sublime "What Do You See In Me," Million Dollar Movie is a delightful slice of orchestral pop that's more than the sum of its influences. Members of the Negro Problem, the Last, and the dB's guest, as do Los Angeles pop mavens Jon Brion and Robbie Rist.

Unlike the band's previous records, Anathema decided to move away from the death-doom inspired music they once incorporated and evolved into a more straightforward gothic metal sound, with Eternity.

To start, musically the album has a more melodic sound while still retaining their metal elements. The guitar has the signature sound that Anathema is known for. In fact, it has become more gloomy. A good example being "Eternity (Part 1)" where the song has terrific melodramatic guitar riffs. This is one of Anathema's earliest albums to include keyboards, with Danny Cavanagh taking keyboard duties. Anathema has included a type of atmosphere that was previously unheard on their albums. The keyboard's sounds are so fantastic that it almost takes the listener to another world. For example, as you listen to "Eternity (Part 2)", the song is greeted with hollowing bass playing and melodic keyboards. As the song goes on, it becomes more spacey, giving the album a high level of soothing atmosphere. Eternity is also the first album in which Vincent Cavanagh used more clean vocals.

As it is common in Gothic Metal music, the vocal approach is very melancholic and at certain moments has that thickness that most singers have in the genre. With Vincent's new approach, he succeeds. Not only did it have the sadness in Vincent's voice, but it also had some moments where he goes back to the harsher style of vocals of their previous album, "The Silent Enigma". All of these musical traits are what makes Eternity such a powerful album. Lyrically, Eternity also shows Anathema are becoming even more sorrowful and gloomy. As I continued on with the album, what Vincent Cavanagh's Vocal approach and sad storytelling add to Eternity is sheer melancholy. The lyrical themes tell topics of sorrow and hopelessness. However, Vincent's vocal approach pretty much show off the lyrical content of Eternity while also being in good unison with the guitar playing.

As a fan of Anathema's early music, Eternity was one album I never got the chance to listen to until now. Prior to that, my favorite album by them was Serenades and Alternative 4 for showing a more gothic approach (Though I've considered Serenades a Death-Doom album); Eternity literally blew me away and took me into a whole other world. Not only was the album was relaxing and atmospheric, but it still had traits taken from Anathema's earlier work like The Silent Enigma and Pentecost III that still make it a metal record. Eternity would now go down as one of the greatest metal albums I've heard so far. One reason being that it has an such empowering atmosphere and melody as any of Anathema's period during the 1990's, but still having a lot of doom influenced metal elements from The Silent Enigma. If there are any metalheads out there that are trying to get into Gothic Metal and wonder which Anathema album is good, I recommend this album!

Still, a shame that they no longer play metal.
