If You Would Like to Hear This Record

Because of various problems with public blogs and rights problems, I have decided to take my blog and convert it to a private email. If you’d like to listen to this album (and more) or any other album I am posting here, just send me your email address at radiovickers1@gmail.com and I will put you on my list. Along with this album, I have a gigantic archive of my vinyl digitizations that gets added to every week. I do them myself and de-click them. Most sound pretty darned good, if I do say so myself.
This is not some come on. Just caution on my part. It costs nothing and there’s nothing to join. Just an email address. I have about a hundred people on my list at the moment. Come and join the musical fun.

Reefer Songs - Vol. 2

Photobucket

Discount Romance (Who’s first single can be found at the bottom of this fine blog) is about to put out a new video entitled, “Sweet Leaf”. The subject matter is pretty well self evident. As a tribute to this grand premier, which is but a scant few days off, I thought I’d present some other artists who have performed songs on this very subject. There are some pretty groovin’ tunes out there about tying one on with a doob.
And here they are for your enjoyment.

Photobucket
Couldn’t find a picture of here on the web, though there is one on the video.

Yack Taylor – Knockin’ Myself Out – Poor Miss Taylor has a run in with the police while partaking. She needs to get herself a medical marijuana card.

Photobucket

Harlan Lattimore & His Connie’s Inn Orchestra – Reefer Man – Not exactly the Lou Reed song, but it’s pretty darned cute spoken homage to the wacky tobaccie.

Harlan Lattimore’s Wiki page is here:

Stuff Smith & His Onyx Club Boys – Here Comes the Man – Could this have been the inspiration for Mr. Reed and his tardy friend. (Notice the prices mentioned!)

Important Stuff Smith info here:

Trixie Smith – Jack I’m Mellow – Trixie is having a great time. That old dry throat comes up in quite a few of these songs. Perhaps the giveaway to those “In the know”.

Don’t Tell Betsy’s latest single.

Here is the latest Death of the Author Brigade video.

Simple Song

And here’s the latest song by Death of the Author Brigade:

'Boy Next Door' is a bouncy little tune about a girl taking "Being Neighborly" to the next level. Who lives across the lawn from you?

The Cats & The Fiddle – Killin’ Jive -Nice little boppy song.  Kind of like a cross between the Fabulous Freak and the Mills Brothers.

And here they are performing the song in a musical short or a movie.

A little Cats & the Fiddle info here:

Fats Waller – Vipers Drag – Ole Fats certainly seems like he’s had a few drags before he sang this song. It’s very playful, verging on a goofy comedy act.

Fats Waller’s Wiki page is here:

Tampa Red & The Chicago Five – I’m Gonna Get High – Very blatantly a drug song. I was surprised “Smokin’ a bowl” went back this far. Tampa even mentions “Needles” in the song.

Photobucket

We’re Gonna Get High Together – Tampa seemed to like getting high. This is another Tampa song on the same subject.

Tampa’s High Wiki page is here:

Jazz Gilum & his Jazz Boyx – Reefer Head Woman - Mr. Jazz doesn’t really like his girlfriend’s habit of partaking of the holy herb. Nice little blues song.

1976 – Songs That Made the Charts #5

Photobucket
This was Jessica Lange in 1976.  Yum!

1976 was a very special year for me. I got out of high school. I moved away from home. I was old enough to legally drink. (Back then, you only had to be 18.) Carter got himself elected president. The top songs on the Chart that year were Tonight’s the Night (by Rod Stewart), Silly Love Songs (Paul McCartney) and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Elton John and Kiki Dee). But, there were other songs on the chart that year. Many, many more. Some, even though they were hits, that you may not remember or want to remember. Thus this blog. 527 songs made it onto the Billboard chart that year. Here are a few that didn’t quite make it to the top.

Photobucket

The Blackbyrds – Happy Music (#132) This is not a very good song. Some very light funky thing with very little variation. This charted higher than the Foghat classic “Slow Ride!” Fleedwood Mac’s “Over My Head” The Sweet’s “Action”. Styx’s “Lorelei” (a pretty good song) Roxy Music’s “Love is the Drug.” Kiss’ “Shout it Out Loud”. Heart’s “Crazy on You!” Think of it! Happy fucking Music charted higher than all these songs. Now give this song a listen and see if the radio listener of 1976 has a lot of explaining to do.

Walking in Rhythm – a far better song and the one they’re mostly known for. This mad it to #75 in 1975. Hopefully, this will get the taste of the previous tune out of your collective mouths.

The Blakbyrds Wiki page is here:

Photobucket

Jimmy Dean – I.O.U. (#199) This is schmaltz to the power of a million. Yep, Jimmy Dean sure knew how to lay it on thick. I only hope that he put more quality into his sausage than he did into this spoken work crap lump. This is so bad, it actually makes you want to punch your mother. (this actually charted 20 spots higher than “Breakaway” by Garfunkle and 25 higher than “Still Crazy After All These Years” by his slightly more successful partner.

Mr. Sausage Mans Wiki page is here:

Photobucket

Cat Stevens – Banapple Gas (#230) I’m not quite sure what this is. Cat obviously thought it was worth putting out as a single. It ain’t no Peace Train, I’ll tell you that. Kind of a Lime in the Coconut thing without any of the charm of the humor.

And here Cat doing this song on some shitty television show. The perfect match.
